Boo Wow Walk Tips

This weekend is one of the most anticipated dog events in Ashtabula, the annual APL Boo Wow Walk. Everyone always has a great time, but costumes and over-indulgence can make our little friends uncomfortable.

Here are some tips for getting through the walk with a happy pet.

  1. When choosing a costume, think comfort first. While we love costumes, our pets usually think otherwise. So have a trial run at home, to make sure your pet can walk comfortably and ther is no rubbing or discomfort. That the costume does not impede movement or vision. Also, make sure your pet does not get too warm.
  2. Go easy on the treats. The excitement of the walk, the costumes, dogs, people and treats can do a number on your pets GI tract. To lessen the likelihood of stomache upset. Limit the treats along the walk. Better yet bring some of your pet’s own treats or food and save the new treats for a less exciting day.
  3. Don’t bring home any “new” friends- like fleas, ticks or intestinal parasites. Make sure your pet has his or her flea and tick control. Of course your dog still needs their monthly heartworm prevention, this will help with most intestinal parasites. Check out the table to see of your pet is protected as well as they can be! I starred the products I recommend the most.

  5. No flexi leashes!!! When on a stroll by ourselves a flexi allows our pet freedom, but at the boo wow walk it could mean disaster. It’s too hard to control your pet on a flexi, instead choose a comfortable4-6 ft leash, that will keep Fido safely by your side.
  6. Meet new friends safely. Just because a dog is wagging it’s tail it does not mean they are friendly, many dogs will wag and yawn when they are scared or upset. Here are some tips when you meet a new dog. Check out this good blog on meeting new dogs.

The Boo Wow walk is a great day filled with fun for all involved and we encourage you to get out there and spend some time with your four-legged family member.
